2:00 PM, Michael Naranjo, Sculptor

Now, we head to New Mexico, and give a warm welcome to…..
Michael Naranjo is an award winning, Native American sculptor, who Roger will have the pleasure of interviewing. As a child walking home from school, Michael would pass by the art galleries, and peer in through the windows. The seed was planted, causing him to feel a desire to create his own bronze sculptures. After being blinded in Vietnam, he had to come to terms with his new disability. Never losing his passion for art, he sought to make sculptures fully accessible to the blind, so that they could "Dream, Touch, and Believe." His pieces are included in the collections of the Vatican, the White House, and the Heard Museum.

Cooking not only provides a sense of purpose for Aaron; it also provides a lucrative living, one piece of fudge at a time. McKayla and Aaron work together every day to create confectionary Delights and they have generously agreed to share their story with us at this year’s birthday celebration.

4:00 PM, Sandy Greenberg, Author and Inventor

A bond that’s true! A beautiful and long lasting friendship--
Hailing from Buffalo, New York, Sanford "Sandy" Greenberg was a nineteen-year old junior at Columbia University and a roommate and best friend with Art Garfunkel when, in 1961, his normal vision disappeared from an acute, untreated case of glaucoma. After being told by his doctor that he would be blind the next day, he underwent emergency surgery to relieve the pressure in his eyes, Sandy woke up totally blind. Depressed, and not wishing to return to Columbia, he thought his prospects in life were bleak, but his best friend, Art could not let sandy languish in his misery. He convinced Sandy to return to Columbia. He read to him, described his surroundings, and walked him to classes, and to this day, the two have remained the best of friends! With gentle prodding from his friend, Sandy realized he could do anything he set his mind to accomplish.

Sandy went on to earn a degree from Columbia University, a PhD from Harvard, was a Doctoral student at Oxford, and now chairs the Board of Governors of Johns Hopkins University’s Wilmer Eye Institute. In addition, Sandy is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He served as a White House Fellow during the Johnson Administration and in 2020, published his memoir, "Hello Darkness My Old Friend".

Sandy is an inventor, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. One of his most noteworthy endeavors is a patented compressed speech technique that speeds up words without distortion

We are honored to feature Sandy Greenberg in this year’s celebration! His memoir can be read on BARD or Audible. This interview will be pre-recorded on January 8 by Rich DeSteno.
